Opportunity in the middle of a perfect storm
The Indian financial services sector has been enjoying a natural growth momentum even as the economy swung from highs and lows of global crises over the past decade. Not surprisingly, it has been one of the favourite sectors for private investors to bet on and has generated alpha for almost every PE firm that has built an exposure to the sector.
The financial services sector has attracted over $40 billion of private equity money over the last two decades, accounting for around a sixth of total private investments in the country, according to VCCEdge, the data research platform of Mosaic Digital. It received more than $4 billion in the past 12 months alone and was voted as the favourite sector by top PE executives in the VCCircle annual survey for 2019.
However, the sector has been in the midst of high turbulence over the last two years. While banks were laden with bad loans, non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) were seen as a big opportunity. But over the past 12 months the narrative has changed, with the bank NPA problem being overshadowed by the liquidity issues of NBFCs and apprehensions about the country’s shadow banking system at large.
There have also been disappointments about some emerging segments like payments bank. And even though fintech has become the new mascot of opportunity in the sector, it is yet to create winners who have shown they can conquer more than one or two verticals while building a scalable sustainable venture.
Nevertheless, the industry has seen a lot of corporate activity across its various branches over the past few months.

Rajiv, a B. Tech from IIT Delhi and PGDM from IIM Lucknow, has over 26 years of experience in the banking and financial services industry. Rajiv is currently the Managing Director & CEO of Tata Capital Limited. He is also the Chairman of Tata Capital Financial Services Limited, Tata Capital Housing Finance Limited and Tata Securities Limited and is also on the Board of Tata Cleantech Capital Limited, Tata Capital Pte Ltd. and Tata Realty and Infrastructure Limited.
He has served as an Executive Director on the Board of ICICI Bank where he was responsible for several businesses including retail banking, business banking, rural banking, financial inclusion, technology and digital banking. He has also served as the Chairman of ICICI Home Finance Company Limited and was on the Board of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company Limited. Dr Bhaskar Dasgupta is the Associate Director of Business Development at ADGM focusing on financial services across emerging markets and Europe. Dr Dasgupta is responsible for overseeing the development of the banking, asset management, private banking sectors including key areas such as Crypto Assets, FinTech, Sustainable Finance, Digital Banking and Digital Investment Management in ADG.
Prior to joining ADGM in 2019, Dr Dasgupta was the Chief Operating Officer of UK Export Finance at the Department of International Trade in the UK Government. His 25 year career included senior level business development and transformation roles in investment banking, transaction banking, technology and consulting in firms such as HSBC, ABN AMRO, Citigroup and PwC.
Dr Dasgupta holds a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Bhopal, an MBA in Finance from Indore University, a PhD in Financial Modelling & AI from the University of Manchester, and a PhD in Politics from Kings College London. He is currently completing a PhD in Food History from Brunel University.
Gaurav is the Co-Founder and MD of Vivriti Capital which founded in June 2017. Satyam spearheads Business, Liabilities and Relationship initiatives at LoanTap. Satyam is a banking industry veteran with enriched experience of more than 18 years. He has lead LoanTap to profitability within five quarters of operations while simultaneously generating positive sentiment amongst financial investors.
Before co-founding LoanTap, he was National Head - Mortgages, at IndusInd Bank. His constant drive & team management skills resulted in a loan book of more than Rs. 5,000 crores in LAP in his last assignment.
During his tenure at ICICI Bank, he held multiple significant positions in Product, Business and Credit, including Regional Head - Mortgage. Satyam was pivotal to launching Sanction Guarantee Scheme in Indian Lending ecosystem, earliest experiment to this effect was run for Corporate Channel Customers at ICICI Bank, Pune and since then extended across India.
Satyam also guides an NGO, Purn-Kuti – for socio-economic development of women and children, and likes to engage in adventure sports like paragliding, rafting, and skiing.
Mr. Singh heads the Data Science and Analytics team at TransUnion CIBIL – India’s pioneer and leading credit information company and a trusted partner in credit risk management to the financial services sector.
Mr. Singh brings over a decade and a half of rich experience in machine learning, econometric and statistical modelling and analytical skills. He has a diverse experience of working for diverse businesses like consumer lending, commercial lending, fund management and investment banking.
Mr. Singh holds a MBA in Finance from K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research and a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng), Instrumentation & Control from Bhavnagar University. He has a proven experience of more than a decade of initiating new products, business lines with specialist expertise in generating insights into customer behavior and business processes using statistical inference models.
He is well versed with predictive analytics, modelling techniques like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning; Linear, Logistic & Panel Regressions; Time Series Analysis; Derivatives Valuation and Consumer Wallet Analysis.
Mr. Goenka is a Chartered Accountant and holds an MBA from Xavier Institute of Management, India. He has over 15 years of experience across proprietary investments, structured finance, investment banking and consulting. Immediately prior to joining BPEA, Mr. Goenka spent two years as Head of Underwriting at Religare Credit Advisors Limited, domestic fund investing in Structured Private Debt in India.
Prior to this, he was with Religare Finvest Limited where he oversaw the structuring and underwriting functions for various mid-market corporates across a variety of sectors. He also worked with Deutsche Bank for 5 years in proprietary real estate investments, and within the global credit trading team focusing on transactions for mid and large corporates. He has also worked with JP Morgan in their Investment Banking team in Mumbai for 3 years where he worked on several capital market transactions across sectors.
Anu has approx. 13 years of experience in M&A, private equity, financial services, emerging technologies (blockchain, payment systems, cryptocurrency, etc) and general corporate advisory.
