Donald Ho, Partner, RSM Singapore
Donald started his career as a public accountant in Singapore and since 2004, had spent close to 10 years in China where he was a partner with a Big 4 firm before joining RSM Singapore in 2014. He has served clients in the manufacturing, financial services, property and healthcare industries.
Donald has extensive experience in audit, IPOs, due diligence and consulting. He has performed due diligence reviews for investors in the acquisition and disposal of investments in China, and advised on the establishment of banks, non-bank financial institutions and Sino-foreign joint ventures. His experiences also included the search for joint venture partners, feasibility reviews, due diligence, IT integration, HR advisory, and integration of internal control policies and procedures to ensure compliance with local regulatory requirements.
In addition, he has advised new market entrants and outbound investors on business strategy, feasibility of market entry and opportunities in specific industries. A doyenne in the field of early stage investment and start-up incubation, Dr. Apoorv Ranjan Sharma is the Co-Founder of Venture Catalysts, India’s first Seed Investment & Innovation platform. In his role, he is responsible for driving the strategic planning and overseeing the overall functioning of the organisation.
Dr. Apoorv holds an Electrical Engineering degree from Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, Kanpur, and an MBA from Asia Pacific Institute of Management, New Delhi along with a Diploma in Mentoring Start-ups from University of California, Berkeley. He also holds a PhD in Management, Role of Business Incubators in Economic Growth of India, and is one of the very few professionals with academic certification in Incubation and Early Stage Investment currently active in the start-up field.
Having been involved in early stage investment since 2002, Dr. Apoorv has a series of professional accomplishments to his name. He was the Project Manager of the JSS Technology Incubator/JSS SEED Fund, which was the first Government-sponsored SEED Fund in India. He then took over the task of establishing Amity Innovation Incubator and was responsible for developing its Amity Family Office Fund as its General Manager. Dr. Apoorv has also led the Indian Angel Network (IAN), India’s first and largest angel network at present, as the Vice President of its Western Region Investments and Technology Incubator. He has also been involved as the Executive Vice President of VentureNursery, a start-up accelerator. Venture Catalysts, his latest venture, distils his years of experience and proficiency with various fundamental start-up related concerns into a unique, integrated platform providing solutions to all early stage start-up requirements.
Having been associated with the Indian start-up industry since it came into being, Dr. Apoorv has gained vital insights and practical, in-depth understanding of the Indian start-up ecosystem. He has led several investment drives into thriving ventures and has a portfolio that includes over 10 companies with more than INR 100 crore valuation. Moreover, in his capacity as a start-up mentor, he has also guided several investee companies into securing angel as well as VC funding.
As a co-founder, Dr. Apoorv’s keen business acumen and an eye for innovation has been instrumental in establishing Venture Catalysts as the fastest growing seed investment platform in the country. With several promising ventures such as ConfirmTKT, Siftr, vPhrase Analytics, Coutloot, Vahanalytics, LenDenClub and Inc42 already a part of the VCats investee portfolio, he will now look to enable investments into emerging sectors such as IoT, Artificial Intelligence, Ad Tech, Education, E-Commerce and Retail through the platform.
Dr. Apoorv has, over his career, fostered several close connections within the start-up industry, which he leverages in order to facilitate growth and add value for all key stakeholders in an investee venture. His aim is to lead Venture Catalysts as the foremost single-point start-up solutions platform by revitalising and revolutionising the early stage investment industry backed by his strong industry connections and sourcing capability. Dr. Apoorv is planning to onboard seasoned angels as well as HNIs onto the VCats platform, and will be looking to raise INR 100 crore from multiple investors to drive 15-20 annual early stage investments.
Dr. Bala G. Dharan, Managing Director, Berkeley Research Group
Dr. Bala Dharan, Ph.D., CPA, is Robert B. and Candice J. Haas Professor and Senior Lecturer at Harvard Law School and Research Affiliate at MIT Sloan School of Management. He is also a Managing Director at Berkeley Research Group. He has provided consulting and expert testimony on corporate finance, accounting and auditing, business valuation, and corporate governance issues. He has been invited three times to the United States Congress to testify on financial reporting issues and has been a frequent invited speaker at various corporations and industry conferences. He has provided valuation and strategic consulting for several start-up businesses and helped co-found a software technology business serving the banking industry.
Professor Dharan is an award-winning teacher and has designed and taught dozens of corporate executive education offerings at Wharton School, Rice University, Indian School of Business, and other institutions. He has been a professor or visiting professor at leading global business schools, including MIT Sloan School of Management, University of California at Berkeley, Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, Indian School of Business, and Jones School of Management at Rice University. His research centers on the strategic use of financial information by managers and investors. He is a co-author of four textbooks.
Professor Dharan is a Certified Public Accountant (USA) with ABV (Accredited in Business Valuation) and CFF (Certified in Financial Forensics) credentials. He has a B.Tech degree in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, PGDM (MBA) from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and MS and Ph.D. degrees in accounting from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh.
