While automobile is the mother industry in Pune, its economy is also growing in a multi-dimensional fashion. Pune is one of the most attractive destinations for the IT services industry, which has firmly parked itself in the city. The rise in the number of knowledge workforce, led by growth in IT industry, has had a multiplier effect in consumption-led plays and lifestyle industries like retail, mid-to-high-end apartments, pubs and restaurants, entertainment and so on.
Pune, with a very significant presence of growth sectors, naturally lends itself to fresh investments and entrepreneurial plays. Besides, the region is also not new to private capital. Nearly $1.3 billion of private equity/venture capital money has been invested in Pune across 129 deals in the last decade.
It is still only the tip of the iceberg as Pune is like a microcosm: A pint-sized city which packs up all the elements of economic action. There are thriving businesses in pharmaceuticals, engineering, realty, healthcare, education, food processing, technology startups and consumer-oriented businesses.
