Introduction

VCCircle Hyderabad Investment Forum 2012

VCCircle is back in Hyderabad to discover which way the city’s new ‘Andhrapreneurial’ wave is headed.

The city that is variously dubbed as Cyberabad or India’s bulk drug capital or MFI capital or EPC capital has very effortlessly donned these hats. One of India’s fifth largest cities and the key contributor to the state GDP, Hyderabad Inc. just like the city itself is a blend of old and new. Hyderbad Inc. is much like a microcosm of India Inc. in that it covers a healthy smattering of all key verticals and sectors.

Much of Hyderabad’s traditional wealth comes from land and agriculture but this capital has now been expressing itself in many new industries particularly in the knowledge economy of IT and pharma. At the same time, the native penchant for construction and contracting continues at the same pace.

The other dominant theme of Hyderabad is, of course, pharma. Many of the homegrown pharma companies have been already been cherry-picked by global MNCs who see value in the Indian generic and bulk drugs play. With the largest number of USFDA plants outside of the US in Hyderabad, there may be a lot of M&A (cross-border) deals that are still on the radar. Will the latest M&A deals trigger Andhra promoters to follow suit?

The other theme that could pan out in a big way in the next couple of years is healthcare. The sector being one of the prominent contributors to the country’s gross domestic product, has seen entrepreneurship and innovation with novel businesses here in Hyderabad. reflects the sheer size and scope of this business segment. A rise in the incidence of lifestyle-related diseases paired with a rise in income levels have emphasized the need for innovation and investments for better healthcare facilities in the country.

In this backdrop, VCCircle is proposing a summit in Hyderabad to discover the investment potential that this economy so uniquely offers. The participating companies, banks, intermediaries and private equity funds will share their route map to understanding Hyderabad Inc.
