Introduction

VCCircle Chennai Investment Forum II

One of the country’s top five large states in terms of its contribution to national income, Tamil Nadu always offered a large potential for financial investors including private equity and venture capital funds.

But, the emergence of the state as the fifth largest destination for PE/VC deals since January 2005 has been against the odds of a conservative profile of South India-based business families who typically tend to take small business steps and are largely cautious of bringing stakeholders from outside. At the same time, it also represents the rise of a new set of entrepreneurs seeking cash and expertise of PE/VC funds for giving shape to their business plans.

At our maiden investment conference in end-2009, we discovered that Conservatism, a quality that has come to be much respected after the world saw its worst-ever economic slowdown, is a trait that is in the DNA of Tamil Nadu Inc. The state has often faced criticism for its risk-averse approach. But, in the new world order, conservatism is getting painted by a brush that sees it as being mindful, diligent, accountable and trustworthy. This conservatism and the long-term approach of entrepreneurs actually spell low NPAs and investing into less risky assets from the Venture Capital/Private Equity point of view.

Not surprisingly then, PE/VC deals worth $2.6 billion spread across as many as 193 transactions have been struck by companies headquartered in Tamil Nadu, as per VCCircle data. The prominent sectors in terms of volume and the number of transactions include IT/ITES, manufacturing, banking & financial services, healthcare services, utilities, engineering, digital media, hospitality & travel and media & entertainment.

To capture this entrepreneurial spirit in Tamil Nadu, while indentifying the best investment opportunities for investors, VCCircle launches the 2nd edition of its immensely successful Chennai Investment Forum. The forum, in partnership with the local industry associations, will bring together more than 200 entrepreneurs, CEOs, private equity heads and dealmakers to discuss and debate the road ahead for making deals in this emerging market.
