Overview
The Indian healthcare sector is a story of resilience in the face of the worst-ever crisis the world has seen in the last year. Much like sectors like education and food, where consumer spending is of non-discretionary nature, healthcare too enjoys a similar priority and may have, hence, escaped the downturn with minimal bruises.
What makes the healthcare segment even more compelling is the inherent potential that exists for organic growth.
Consider these numbers: The $35-billion industry is projected to touch over $75 billion by 2012 and $150 billion by 2017 (Technopak Advisors). The Confederation of Indian Industry pegs an annual investment of $50 billion into healthcare for the next 20 years. India needs to add 3.1 million beds by 2018 against the existing 1.1 million and that alone means an immediate injection of $82 billion.
The drivers for this growth are several: Increase in lifestyle-related diseases, a growing elderly population and rise in income levels pushing the demand for better healthcare facilities. While the trend remains bullish for core healthcare, it is also percolating down to interesting niches and ancillary segments such as medical devices, diagnostics, pharmacy chains besides drug and biotech firms.
So, how real is this opportunity? Are you well-positioned to exploit this potential? What are the opportunities in the Indian healthcare business? Are they in the urban or rural space; mass market or premium; super speciality or primary; generic or niche and so on?
VCCircle will help you find the answers at its first dedicated Healthcare Investment Summit on September 30, 2009 at Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, New Delhi. The exclusive forum will bring together India's top-notch healthcare entrepreneurs, CEOs, private equity fund managers, venture capitalists, bankers, advisors and management consultants.
Go ahead. Get a shot in the arm.
