Dr. Ajay Bakshi, Managing Director & CEO, Manipal Hospitals
Dr. Ajay Bakshi is the Managing Director & CEO of Manipal Health Enterprises (Manipal Hospitals), the corporate healthcare and hospitals entity of the Manipal Education & Medical Group. Manipal Hospitals’ healthcare network comprises of primary, secondary and tertiary facilities. It has 16 hospitals covering 5,000 beds in India and overseas.
Dr. Bakshi has played multiple roles - as a neurosurgeon, a stem cell scientist, a strategy consultant and as Managing Director & CEO of a hospital network in North India over the last 2 decades. He is a MBBS and M.Ch. (Neurosurgery) from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. After finishing his Chief Residency, he has worked as a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Vidya Sagar Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences (VIMHANS), New Delhi. During this period he started a successful endoscopic neurosurgery practice, in addition to performing more than 600 major brain and spinal surgeries for complex neurosurgical conditions.
In 2002, he transitioned to a research role at Dept. of Neurobiology, Drexel University College of Medicine, Philadelphia, where he built a research program around minimally invasive stem cell transplantation for spinal cord injuries. Based on an R21 research grant that he received from National Institute of Health, Dr. Bakshi developed and demonstrated the safety and efficacy of Autologous Stem Cell transplantation via lumbar puncture technique in animal models - a procedure that is becoming main stream for Human Stem Cell transplantation now. At the same time, he also completed the 2 year Wharton Management Program from The Wharton School.
In 2005, Dr. Bakshi joined McKinsey and Company, New Jersey and served large US corporations in Medical devices, Hospitals, Pharmaceuticals and Health Insurance sectors around questions related to their Strategy, Organizations and Operations. In 2008, he moved to their Dubai Office and got an opportunity to serve Prime Ministers and Health Ministers of the Middle East and African countries on questions related to the design and effectiveness of their countries' Health Systems.
In 2011 - Dr. Bakshi joined Max Healthcare as their CEO and within 9 months was elevated to the Managing Director role. During his tenure at Max, he led a succesful launch of 4 new hospitals as well as a comprehensive turn-around of the overall network.

Dr. Ajay Nair is the Co-Founder & Managing Director of MeraDoctor. With over 200,000 patients and growing, MeraDoctor is one of the fastest growing digital health services in India! In the next 2 years, they aim to become the largest primary care service in the country by patient numbers. Before MeraDoctor worked with Acumen Fund in New York and Nairobi with a focus on Health, Energy and Capital Markets. He is a trained physician who graduated with an MBBS from Grant Medical College, Mumbai and an MPH from Harvard University.
Dr. Ajay Shah, Professor, National Institute for Public Finance and Policy
Dr Shah is an aeronautical engineer from IIT, Bombay, and a PhD in Economics from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.
He began his career as a consultant with Rand Corporation, Santa Monica and then returned to Mumbai as an Associate Professor at IGIDR. He spent the next four years as a consultant with the Department of Economic Affairs, New Delhi.
He is currently a Senior Fellow at the National Institute for Public Finance and Policy in New Delhi.

Dr. Amit Kakar joined Novo Holdings Asia in August 2020 as Head of Asia to lead investments and partnerships across the region, focusing primarily on the markets in China, Southeast Asia and India.
Dr. Kakar has more than 25 years of healthcare experience with several senior management roles across the globe and having worked in India, China, Singapore, Denmark and the USA.
His previous roles include Head of M&A and Business Development at Everlife Asia, Head of Healthcare Investments for Asia with the Avenue Capital Group, and various senior leadership positions with GE Healthcare.
Dr. Kakar is a Medical Doctor with a postgraduate degree in Radiation and Nuclear Medicine from Tata Memorial Hospital and Cancer Centre in Mumbai, India.

Dr. Amit Varma, President, Health Care Initiative Religare Capital Markets Limited
Dr. Amit Varma comes with a rich experience of over 20 years in the medical arena and over 12 years in the management field. He is also Director, Critical Care Medicine and is member of the Clinician Engagement Group, Fortis & Escorts group of Hospital, New Delhi.
Amit pursued his MBBS and MD from University of Delhi, and completed his residency from the State University of New York. He successfully completed an Executive MBA from the University of Chicago, and did fellowships in critical care at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, with sub specialization in cardiac critical care at the Cleveland Clinic.
Amit is on the editorial board for the society for research and is a member of the society for critical care medicine, Asian pediatrics cardiac surgery and cardiology. He is an Expert Consultant on CNN-IBN and a visiting faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh and the Cleveland Clinic. He was also earlier attached as a Healthcare consultant to the World Bank and the European commission. A complete outdoor person, Amit plays soccer, loves swimming and hiking.
