Dr. M.G.R Educational And Research Institute

A heritage of excellence

One of the Constituent Units of Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute, Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College was instituted 30 years ago by Thiru A.C.Shanmugam, a Philanthropist and great Educationalist who formulated several innovative projects for the up-liftment of rural and the urban folks alike and founded 3 Charitable and Educational Trusts at Chennai, Arni and Bangalore and is the driving force behind setting up the educational institutions.  

Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College and Thai Moogambigai Dental College and Hospital were founded in 1988 and 1991 respectively and were upgraded to a Deemed to be University status as Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute, University in 2003.  A.C.S. Medical College and Hospital, Velappanchavadi, Chennai, started in 2008 has been brought in to the ambit, as a constituent unit, of Deemed to be University by MHRD Notification.

The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Govt. of India has graded Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute – Deemed to be University under GRADED AUTONOMUS STATUS  in Category – II.

Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute, University has a clear hold on the future and is focused on training students to high competence and to possess academic excellence complimented by a well-rounded personality. The high intensity education driven by technology will help them surmount any challenge they are likely to face in the modern and competitive world. We have currently on our University rolls more than 10000 students, from all parts of India, especially from UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and North Eastern parts of India, and also from Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Turkey, Switzerland, Tanzania, etc.,  in Engineering & Technology, Dental Surgery, Medicine, Nursing, Physiotherapy and Humanities & Sciences with around 1000 faculty members, besides more than 1500 non-teaching staff.

The courses of the University are accredited by NAAC and according to a survey by the Sunday Indian; the University is ranked third in India and has also been accorded with “A” Grade (3.31 out of 4) rating by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous body under the UGC.  Four of our University Departments – Biotechnology, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering and Electrical and Electronics Engineering – have been accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi.

Medical University is the Present Vice Chancellor, Dr.G.Gopalakrishnan, former Vic Chancellor of our University is our Pro Vost, Dr.M.K. Padmanabhan, former ISRO Senior Scientist and our former Vice Chancellor is our Principal Director, Dr. M. Ravichandran, former Director of AICTE, New Delhi is our Pro Chancellor, Dr. C.S. Jayachandran, former Director of Medical Education, Tamil Nadu is our Pro Vice Chancellor and Dr. Mylswamy Annadurai, former ISRO Eminent Scientist is our Pro Chancellor.

  • All the Courses run by our University are approved by the respective Statutory Bodies such as AICTE, MCI, DCI, NCTE, INC, PCI and COA.
  • Five of our University Courses are accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) (5 Depts.) and National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC).
  • Admissions are through Entrance Examination MGREEE/NEET on all – India basis.
  • Ours is the only private University within the Chennai Corporation Limits, which enables the students to spend more time on study without wasting much time on journey. 
  • All our Laboratories are equipped with modern & latest Equipments and high end Computers with Air- Conditioned facilities.
  • All the Departments of our University are having Hi-tech Laboratories with Centre of Excellence for doing research & executing funded projects.

  • Our University has 600 Bedded Multispeciality own Hospital (ACS Multispeciality Hospital, Velappanchavadi) within the City Limit having full-fledged facilities for Medical treatment in General Medicine, Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, Gynecology, Dental, Nursing, Physiotherapy etc., benefiting large number of general public. These facilities are also beneficial for Medical, Dental & Paramedical Students to acquire practical Knowledge during their study.
  • Our University has Laser & Sedation Dentistry and Cosmetic Smile Designing in our Thai Moogambigai Dental College and Hospital.
  • The Medical Council of Sri Lanka has recognized our BDS degree and allowed admission of Sri Lankan students in the BDS programme of our University.
  • ARI-Advanced Research Institute (Main Research Centre of the University) conducts Research for All the funded projects of Both Government and Private agencies like IHRI, CSIR, CVRDE, DRDO Industrial Projects. 
  • Students’ chapters of Professional societies like CSI, IEEE, IETE, ISA, IET, ISOI, SAE, SPE etc. are available. 
  • E Cell, Dr. M.G. R. Educational and Research Institute won the Honour Roll for South Zone during the E Week competition organized by NEN.  NEN has recognized Dr.M.G.R.
